The land of fire and ice has some of the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes; with so many to choose from it may be quite daunting for the first time traveller! So here is my little guide of my seven faves – please comment below if you have your own favourites, I would love to know and discover more!

SEE THE GLACIERS AT JOKULSARLON

My favourite place to visit in Iceland – the glaciers are breathtaking and this is the most spectacular place for that blue ice experience. Drive down early and spend the day walking around and warming up on cups of tea. It is a stunning area and is guaranteed to be the highlight of your trip to Iceland.

BE BLINDED BY THE SPARKLING DIAMOND BEACH…

This gorgeous beach is directly opposite the Jokulsarlon Glaciers – aptly named diamond beach due to the large chunks of icicles that get washed onto its shores. It is a must visit and just one of the most spectacular places. The colder the weather, the larger the ice bergs generally are; some so big you can prop up on them for a great ice mountain shot!

GO FOR AN EXPLORATORY DRIVE THROUGH THE NATIONAL PARK..

The national park is extremely interesting and has the most beautiful landscapes including gorgeous lakes and foliage. It is quiet and away from the super touristy crowd and a must visit for some breathtaking landscape views. This is also where we stumbled upon the friendliest group of Icelandic horses..stunning way to spend the day!

HIKE UP THE WATERFALL AT SKOGAFOSS…

The impressive Skogafoss is my favourite of all the many waterfalls Iceland has to offer. The highlight is the little (but extremely UPHILL) hike all the way up the stairs to the top of the waterfall. It is a great little heart pumper and offers great views and the feeling of success. A brilliant way to work up your appetite before popping off to the gorgeous glass walled on site restaurant for a chilled pint of pale Icelandic ale and a hearty stew.

MARVEL AT THE BASALT COLUMNS ON THE BLACK SAND BEACH OF VIK…

This gem of a beach is also near Vik and the Jokulsarlon glaciers, unlike Diamond beach it features gorgeous rock formations, notably the array of basalt columns. Icelandic folklore tells stories of how these columns were actually trolls who used to lure in ships from the ocean however one day the trolls got caught by the sun of dawn and was frozen into solid stone. If you fancy a further walk on this beach (an hour and a half one way), then walk on to find an abandoned plane wreck to explore … Hello, Lost!! It is also where Justin Bieber filmed one of his music videos haha.

PEEK INTO THE ICELANDIC TURF HOUSES…

These gorgeous little turf houses are dotted all over the countryside – so be sure to keep an eye out and pull up for a little exploration. They are fascinating little places and such a wonder to look at with the way they are built into nooks and crannies of a mountain. Very Studio Gibli-esque!

SOAK YOUR WORRIES AWAY AT THE BLUE LAGOON…

Last but not least, the famous enchanting Blue Lagoon. Such an iconic Icelandic location for the most amazing blue steamy photos as well as a wonderful relaxing soak. To visit, you will HAVE to prebook as it gets extremely busy. Tickets start from Β£45 which may seem steep but it is completely worth it as it will definitely be one of your most memorable highlights of the trip! Be sure to apply as many mud masks as you can, sip on cold drinks in the steamy warm lagoon and be sure to keep your hair OUT of the water as the lagoon completely dries it up and turns it crispy.

Book your stay in Reykjavic and Vik now!
